Our night battles with witchcraft are a remnant of a belief that the darkness, the night, engenders
nocturnal gatherings of witches, devils, snakes (they operate in both land and water, ergo spooky)
it may not be too daring to suggest that these mythological fears which flourished in antiquity and covered much of central Europe are still alive and well in the night time fears of today. Witches
may have morphed into facile Hollywood ET type fears but our night battle are as consistent as ever.
Some would trace our fears back to ancients pre-Christian pagan fears of a threat to the crops.
