Robert Mapplethorpe and imagination

Susan Sontag once referred to the 'pornographic imagination', I don't think she was referring to
Robert Mapplethorpe, though she migth not have been far wrong if she had.

However reading about Mapplethorpe and his background he seemed to me to be - although troubled -
with a heavy duty family background, he seemed to emerge as a thinking 'artist'.

Look how he made Andy Warhol appear as a dauphin.
