We are not creatures of focused inwardness.

Cognitive science shows us that this take on our 'inner eye' is deeply misleading.

Our thinking is more like a newspaper, reporting on decisions made elsewhere, and if anything less reliable than the newspaper.

Our business of living is accomplished by a variety of embodied sub-personal action/perception complexes that link with other networks of mutual transformation.

The polymorphous heroes of Homer -  self contradictory and open to the prompting of Gods, looks more accurate that the focused inwardness of Augustine and his lineage of inward looking philosophers.
