"I really knew what he was thinking...."

If we really knew what the other  person was thinking then it would be not be the other. 


Instead, what we are is a sort of vector (the direction or course followed by an airplane, missile, or the like) of co-participation through which we orient and constitute each other in the cultural  and temporal world we inhabit.
