How that feeling that you are 'civilised' comes about.

I feel I am civilised to a degree. How did that come about? Well, it came about by a thousand petty humiliations, endless self denigration, deceptions, lies, seductions, cynicisms, bribes, countless disappointments, all these were the  price of the ‘civilising ‘process
